SOFTWARE PROCESS IMPROVEMENT IN SMALL ENTERPRISES -
SPIRE (Software Process Improvement in Regions of Europe) is a European ESSI Project (ESSI Dissemination Action No. 23873)
especially addressing small and very small Software Development Companies (SSDs). Given the fact, that the success of software
companies hinges on the quality of their software products, which in turn is a function of the quality of their software development
process (including managerial and organizational aspects), SPIRE tries to support software process improvement (SPI) in four
European regions, approximately 70 SSDs in total will profit directly from this initiative throughout Europe, and hopefully many
more from dissemination of the results and the Best Practice Guide produced by the SPIRE partners.
The following countries are participating in SPIRE: Ireland, United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), Sweden, Italy, and Austria. The
duration is 18 months. The project in fact started in autumn 1997.
