reflections on Fundamentals 98

Foundations Track

The idea behind the Fundamentals conference is summarized in my introduction of the proceedings. I quote. "Theory of Computing has played and will continue to play a major role in the development of Computer Science. It has provided major notions and fundamental insights, and many of the fascinating applications of computing would be impossible without the groundwork done by theoretical computer science.
The Fundamentals Conference features eight invited talks that highlight current work in theoretical computer science. The lectures cover geometric computing, combinatorial optimization, parallel computing, verification of embedded systems, computational biology, algorithm animation, and implementation of algorithms. The talks will show the intellectual beauty of theoreticial computer science as well as its relevance to the practical side of computing."

The talks were excellent and I enjoyed all of them. So I could call the Fundamentals conference a success. However, it was a pity that the conference had only a small audience.
