TOURIST PROGRAMS

Tours are being organized both before and after the congress offering participants a chance to learn more about the two countries, their culture and history, as well as to relax. Participants are encouraged to combine the congress attendance with holidays. A special partner program is offered in parallel to the congress.

The organizers have chosen the following highlights for you. Departure for all tours: in front of the Vienna Opera (five minutes walking distance from the congress venue). Minimum of participants is 20.

Sunday, 30 August 1998

• 9:30   Walk through "Old Vienna"   Duration: 3 hrs.  VP1  180 ATS
  This guided walking tour takes you to parts of the old town that can only be discovered on foot. Visit St. Stephen´s Cathedral and Mozart´s residence, the Figaro House. Follow winding medieval lanes and peek into charming courtyards in this oldest part of the city. See St. Rupert´s Church, the oldest church in Vienna, dating back to the 11th century; it received its present from in the 11th century. Return to the Opera House via the synagogue.
• 14:00   Tales of the Vienna Woods    Duration: 4 hrs.   VP2   350 ATS
  Take a break from the city and drive to the Vienna Woods, which inspired Johann Strauss to compose a waltz. Pass the Liechtenstein Castle and Höldrichsmühle which Franz Schubert memorialized in his "Lime Tree" song. Visit the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz which dates back to the 12th century and where the last Babenberg ruler of Austria is buried. The last stop on the tour is the hunting lodge at Mayerling, where Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria committed suicide.

• 9:00   Historic Sites of Vienna     Duration: 3 hrs.  VP3    350 ATS
  This city tour will show you the major sights in Vienna. As you drive along the magnificent Ring Boulevard you will see the Imperial Hofburg Palace, the Opera house, Parliament, City Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts and other impressive edifices. A tour of Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Austrian Emperors, is a highlight of this excursion.
• 14:00  The Heart of Vienna    Duration: 2,5 hrs. VP4  220 ATS

  Tour the Imperial Treasury and see the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Walk through the courtyards in the Imperial Hofburg Palace complex. Admire St. Stephen´s Cathedral inside and out.

Tuesday, 1 September 1998

• 9:30  Spanish Riding School   Duration: 2,5 hrs. VP5  300 ATS
  Enjoy a morning in the heart of Vienna. Watch the famous white horses from Lipizza during their morning training session and be reminded of the imperial grandeur of a time now long past. Visit the National Library with its magnificent hall and profusion of historical documents and at the same time, get a feeling for the dimensions of the Habsburg residence, of which the Library is a part of.
• 14:00  Memorial Sites of Musicians Duration: 4 hrs. VP6  290 ATS
  As the musical capital of the world, Vienna has created a number of memorials for musicians who lived and worked in the city. See Franz Schubert´s birthplace, now a museum, the house in Heiligenstadt where Bethoven composed the "Eroica" Symphony, and the Haydn Museum, the building in which he composed his "Four Seasons" and "Creation". Follow the footsteps of Mozart, Bruckner and the Strauss family and acquire a feeling for Vienna´s musical heritage.

The programs will start from the congress venue. Each program has been rendered a code: BP = Budapest tours, BE = Budapest evening programs, C = tours to the country side
