The 5th ICCHP'96 has changed it's title form "Computers for Handicapped Persons" to "Computers Helping People with Special Needs".

This modification is not at all a simple alternation, it symbolizes a new opening to further and broader aspects as well as a change in handling the situation and the problems of handicapped persons.

The "5th International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs" in Linz/Austria is devided in three fields: Pre-Conference, Conference and Poster-Session.

The Pre-Conference is assigned to be an integral part of the Conference. The workshop oriented presentations are more general, overlapping, and open to broader discussions. They are to promote ideas and to motivate to realizations in research and development. Consistently they play an introductory role into the comprehensive field of the amelioration in the living and working for people with special needs.

The Conference itself is devided in different tracks presenting new aspects in research and development of Hearing Impairment, Deafness, Visual Impairment / Computer Acess Technology, Mobility Impairment, Mental Impairment, Language and Speech Impairment. Special way is given to Computer applications in medicine, above all in Oculmotor Research. The role, communication technology is to play in Information, Education and Profession of people with special needs is demonstrated in different presentations. Here the authors open the horizon to new dimensions of world wide communication and interaction. Although visual impairments with aspects to orientation and mobility, access to documents, I/O devices, tactile displays, and even braille and music are still dominating, this 5th ICCHP leads to the technological challenge and new man-machine interactions.

The Poster-session accompanies the programme and presents concrete demonstrations of research, development and applications.

The proceedings of the ICCHP'94 were published by Springer Verlag in their series Lecture Notes in Computer Science Vol. 860
